2008 MINI MISSIVE #10

STARTING THE CLOCK II (3-2-5)

On a scrimmage down that is not a try or in extra periods, the clock starts on the ready for play unless it was stopped for the following reasons:

#

CLOCK STARTS ON SNAP WHEN

COMMENT

1
Team B next snaps the ball.
Team B could next snap the ball after a Team A penalty on fourth down that carries a loss of down and Team A does not have a first down after penalty enforcement. The clock was not stopped to award a first down to Team B (3-2-5-e).
2
After a legal kick down.
It is not a legal kick down when, for example, a Team A player in position to punt the ball muffs the snap and then kicks the ball as the ball is rolling on the ground. This is an illegal kicking foul, not an illegal kick.
3
The previous down ended in a touchdown, touchback, safety or an incomplete pass other than an illegal pass to conserve time.
A catch by an ineligible receiver in the opponent's end zone or a catch of an illegal forward pass by any player in the opponent's end zone is a touchdown even though not supported by the technical wording of the rule.
4
When a Team A ball carrier or a Team A backward pass goes out of bounds with less that two minutes remaining in a half. A backward pass thrown out of bounds to conserve time is an exception.
The clock starts on the ready if a Team B ball carrier, fumble or backward pass goes out of bounds and Team A next snaps the ball.
5
When a Team A fumble goes out of bounds between the goal lines on or behind the spot of the fumble with less than two minutes remaining in a half.
The clock always starts on the ready for 60 minutes when a Team A fumble goes forward and out of bounds between the goal lines. A Team B fumble forward and out of bounds between the goal lines results in the clock starting on the snap if Team B next snaps the ball.
6
After a delay foul by a team in a scrimmage kick formation.
This is true even if the kicking team allows the play clock to expire without snapping the ball. This is true even when the defense declines the penalty.
7
At the start of the second and fourth periods.
Always.
8
After a team timeout
Always.
9
Rule 3-4-3 is invoked for unfair consuming of time.
An illegal pass to conserve time is also covered by 3-2-5-a-8. The pass could be forward or backward. A false start, intentional or unintentional, is one foul that results in the use of 3-4-3 when the opponent is placed at a disadvantage.
